Experts canvass curriculum review to meet global demands

Experts in the education sector have restated calls for a review of the curriculum to meet present day realities.

They made the call during a courtesy visit to Kumaro Junior High School, Lagos, where they also honoured some teachers in the school.

The visit was organised by Adventures planet and Shelves, a brand of Virtual International School Africa limited, in partnership with Live Abundantly and In God We Trust ltd (IGWT), to recognise teachers in public schools.

In her keynote address, founder of Live Abundantly, Dr. Ama Onyerinma, said the curriculum should be revamped for students to be ready for global employment.
She also stressed the need for continuous teachers training for them to be relevant in the 21st century.

“The curriculum is deficient in many ways; learning is digitised and technology is crucial for education, it is an important skill that must be learnt. The curriculum must be reviewed to accommodate current trends. When you teach teachers skills and strategies for connecting with the students, and getting them ready for the 21st century citizenship and workplace, then you are on the right track,” he added.

Principal of British International school, Lagos, Mr. Kelvin Donnelly, noted that the curriculum for the 21st century must be very dynamic.

“Nigeria’s curriculum needs to be reviewed or revised; a lot of our students are still struggling to pass exams, and I think there has to be more inclusion of digital knowledge. There has to be a review even in the whole education system,” he said.

Donnelly added that the government needs to reinvest in teachers’ training.
“There has to be a huge investment in teachers training, many of them have to be exposed to other ways of doing things,” he added.

Three best teachers were nominated by students and given a cash gift and teachers got stationery gift boxes from various partners. Donnelly presented a certificate and offered a free mentorship and training programme for the best three teachers in Kuramo Junior High School as his contributions towards the development of teachers in public schools.
